Justice no longer blind.

by Jared on May 26th, 2009

It’s a great image that represents America. Lady Justice stands proudly there delivering her decisions with blindfold over her eyes. The meaning of this blindfold is that justice is blind. Justice does not care if you have made 3 Oscar winning movies, it does not care if your dad owns a world wide hotel chain, it does not care if you are related to a president. However also, justice (in theory) does not care if you are a minority. It does not care how much you got picked on growing up. And it also does not care what part of the country you come from, what color you are, etc., etc. Well that ends today. With President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayer, he is delivering on his promise to nominate a judge with several qualities, one of those being “empathy”. This can be seen clearly in her statement back in 2001, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,”

Amazing isn’t it? Imagine me saying, “I would hope that a wise white man would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a hispanic woman, who does not know what it’s like for everyone to assume you are a bigot and judge people based on their skin color”

I would be branded a racist, no? Well in the days of hope and change, rather than our founding documents, statements like these get you nominated to the Supreme Court, rather than outed for the racist statements that they are.

Lady Justice should be blind. Not shaped, or changed based on whether you know “what it’s like” for someone to “live the life they have had to live”

She is also quoted as saying “the court of appeals is where policy is made”. No, your “honor” the court of appeals is where justice should be served. The political spectrum is where policy is VOTED ON and made. This is why we have 3 branches of government, which are now creepingn closer and closer together. To quote a famous progressive refrain, “if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention” or you are a lemming.

Simply stunning.

See for yourself.  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/15/us/15judge.html,

Would Republicans “dare vote against first Latina”? I am so glad we have moved past race being a factor. http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/

The Judicial Oath taken by all judges on the supreme court states: “I do solemnly swear, I will administer justice without respect to persons and do equal right to the poor and to the rich. And I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all duties…”
